Trekking Guide – Your Leader on the Trail
Your lead trekking guide is a trained, licensed expert who takes charge of your journey from beginning to end. More than just showing the way, they are responsible for your overall safety, route management, cultural interpretation, and all the behind-the-scenes logistics that make your trek smooth.

Duties of the Trekking Guide:
Leads the group along the correct route, keeping an eye on trial and weather conditions

Handles logistics, including permits, accommodation, and daily plans

Shares knowledge with trekkers about the region’s culture, heritage, landscapes. And native
Responds to any medical or emergency situations

Guide Compensation:
$50 per day, which covers their wage, meals, accommodation, and insurance

Tipping suggestion: At least $5 per day. More is always welcome for outstanding service

Assistant Guide – The Extra Support You Didn’t Know You Needed
The assistant guide works closely with the lead guide to ensure no one is left behind. They offer additional support to the group, walking alongside slower trekkers, keeping communication clear, and adding an extra layer of safety to the trek.



Duties of the Assistant Guide:
Assists in managing group pace and coordination
Accompanies trekkers who need a slower or more relaxed pace
Helps with communication, safety checks, and morale
Can step in as lead guide if needed
Assistant Guide Compensation:
Earns $40 each day, which covers salary, meals, lodging, and insurance.
Tipping suggestion: Around $4–5 per day

Porter – The Backbone of Every Trekking Adventure
Our porters are the unsung champions of the trekking journey.  They carry your main backpack or duffel bag (up to 20–25 kg), so you can hike freely with just a small daypack. Malung Treks prioritizes ethical porter treatment, ensuring fair pay, appropriate clothing, and responsible weight limits.

Duties of the Porter:
Carries your main luggage between lodges or teahouses
Maintains a steady pace while staying close to the group
Offers help in difficult weather or rough terrain
Can assist in emergencies when needed

Porter Compensation:
$35 per day, which includes wage, meals, accommodation, and insurance
Suggested tip: $5 per day as a thoughtful way to show your appreciation.

1. Are guides and porters insured?
Yes, every team member at Malung Treks is covered by comprehensive insurance. Their coverage includes accidents and emergency evacuation.

2. Do I have to tip the team?
Tipping is not compulsory, but it's a long-standing tradition and deeply appreciated. A common recommendation is to tip your guide around $5 per day, and between $4 to $5 daily for assistant guides and porters. Feel free to give more if they went above and beyond.

3. What’s the best way to tip?
2. Gratuities are usually offered once the trek has been completed. It's best to offer them in cash (Nepali Rupees or USD preferred). You can hand tips individually to each member or give a group tip—whichever you're comfortable with.

4. Do porters speak English?
Most porters know only basic English. Communication is usually handled by your guide and assistant guide. That said, porters are always cheerful, hardworking, and do everything they can to support you.

5. Can I hire just a guide or porter?
