There may be over 1000 trekking companies in Kathmandu, but Malung Treks is as unique as the trek it will provide for you. Their motto “Guests are gods” rings true, especially in their attention to detail and hospitality. They are an honest community of experienced trekkers who truly want to show you the beauty of their country. Bal Kumar Khaling Rai was my guide through Poon Hill and Annapurna Base Camp. To be honest, this trip would not have been the same without him. Every step of the way felt like an adventure; he taught me fascinating facts about the jungle and Nepali culture. I learned to see the Himalayas through the eyes of a local, to notice which plants made good medicinal soup, how to make a toy out of bamboo shoots, or how to make local alcohol Raksi. Bal made me feel welcome to be part of their culture, and not like an outsider. Bal is very good at accommodating your needs - he made jokes all the time and he noticed when I was feeling weak. He made sure I was physically taken care of and he was able to adjust our itinerary on the spot. He always wanted to bring me to the hotels with the best views, best service, and best local foods. Nepal is a beautiful country, with breathtaking mountains and hospitable people. It is even more so because of Bal and Malung Treks. If you want a good time in Nepal, make a reservation through them and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
We did this trek with the addition of Poon Hill this September. The views from Poon Hill and ABC are breathtaking, but they are limited during the remaining days of the trek since the trail leads through a deep valley. The trek is more strenuous than it seems to be because of a number of steep up and down stairs climbs required to cross a few valleys. All in all, the views from ABC are worth it. After the trek, we can firmly recommend Malung Treks to anyone. Raj is a professional manager who can arrange barely everything within a minute or so, starting from airport pick up and drop off, flight tickets including picturesque mountain flights, all the trekking stuff ending with a relaxing side trip to Chitwan to rest after all the days of walking or Kathmandu sightseeing. Bal Kumar Magar, who was our guide, is one of the nicest people I have met in my life. Despite his young age, he feels on the Himalayan trails like at home. He is always there to answer any question or concern always willing to adjust the itinerary to your needs, no matter if it means extending or shortening the walking day. I highly recommend Bal and Malung Treks to everyone
Let me start by saying how blown away I was by the wonderful staff at Malung Treks. Raj Kumar Rai is a kind, and very professional coordinator who went above and beyond to make our trek a thoroughly wonderful experience. Right from the start, Raj (owner/manager) and Bal Kumar Rai (our lead guide) greeted us at the airport with smiling faces and served our every need, while properly informing us of any upcoming changes. Bal is the kindest and most genuine person I have met, he kept up with our groups strange sense of humor, and answered every question with very understandable english. Our trek was FANTASTIC, we did the EBC and Kalapathur trek for a total of 13 days. Having Bal speak on our behalf made the trip much more enjoyable and gave us insight to things most other groups were surely missing. We went to see a local culture market in Namche Bazar, with no other tourists! and our downtime was well spent, socializing and singing with Bal Kumar and our Porter, Madan. Overall, for the price, I couldnt have had a better trip anywhere. I will be coming back to Nepal, and Malung Treks will be my go to trekking choice. Pre-Trip Information
We knew Raj Kumar Rai and his Trekking company Malung Treks & Expedition through volunteering at Conscious Impact. We have friends who have used his company before and have had excellent experiences, so when we decided to do Manaslu circuit, we contacted them first. We also found the price to be reasonable and were glad to hear that some of the proceeds go towards rebuilding Raj's home village in the Everest Region. Malung Treks is also a member of KEEP Kathmandu which encourages sustainable trekking. This was our first time trekking through a company and with a guide, and we were unsure of what to expect. Raj immediately impressed us by being so quick to respond and by getting all the necessary paperwork done quickly for us. He gave us all the information we needed ahead of time so we could be best prepared. We met Raj and our guide, Bal Kumar Rai, before we left for trekking and had the chance to get our questions answered. From the very start, Bal was attentive and informative and also fit in perfectly with our group dynamic. Having him as our guide allowed us to gain insight into the daily lives of villagers we encountered, to try interesting local food, and understand the flora and fauna of the Manaslu region. He enriched our experience so much and for that we are so grateful. We had a safe, smooth, fun, and beautiful trek. Thank you Malung Treks so much for allowing us this memorable time in Nepal!
